SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemen’s Defense Ministry says the U.S.-born al-Qaida cleric Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed.

The ministry provided no details in the statement Friday on one of its websites.

Yemeni security officials told The Associated Press that there was an airstrike Friday morning in the country’s east, between al-Jawf and Marib regions. The officials could not provide more details and spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

Tribal elders in the area say the airstrike targeted an al-Qaida convoy in the east. The elders could not say if there were casualties.

The United States has al-Awlaki, who has found refuge in Yemen, on a kill-or-capture list.
