LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have picked 22-year-old Drew Smyly as the fifth starter for their rotation.

Manager Jim Leyland announced the choice Sunday. He also said right-hander Luis Marte won the final spot in the bullpen.

Smyly has yet to pitch above Double-A. The left-hander will get his first major league start on April 12 against Tampa Bay after a tuneup outing for Triple-A Toledo.

Smyly has been in four exhibition games and has a 2.84 ERA.

Justin Verlander, Doug Fister, Max Scherzer and Rick Porcello are scheduled to start Detroit’s first five games. Verlander will go twice before Smyly’s debut.

The 25-year-old Marte pitched four times for Detroit last season. This spring, he was 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA.

The Tigers optioned pitchers Duane Below and Bryan Villareal to Triple-A.
