BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Samford has hired Indiana assistant Bennie Seltzer as head basketball coach.

The Birmingham native will be introduced Tuesday at a news conference, replacing Jimmy Tillette.

He has spent the past four years under Tom Crean at Indiana after following him from Marquette.

Samford athletic director Martin Newton says during the search “all roads led to Bennie Seltzer.” He called him a “total package” as a coach and recruiter.

Seltzer also spent nine seasons as an assistant at Oklahoma.

Crean says his former assistant will approach any task “with integrity, energy, and unyielding attitude for success.”

The 41-year-old Seltzer played for Washington State and is the program’s all-time leader in assists and ranks second in 3-pointers made and sixth in steals and points.
