HOODSPORT, Wash. (AP) — A Mason County sheriff’s officer says a 64-year-old Hoodsport, Wash.-area man has been arrested in the fatal shooting of his wife at their home.

Chief Deputy Dean Byrd says deputies first thought the Thursday afternoon shooting might have been an assisted suicide but now believe the man shot his wife of 37 years after an argument.

Neither the man nor his wife, reportedly in her mid-50s, was immediately identified.

The woman was dead at the scene.

Byrd says the man was booked into the Mason County Jail for investigation of murder.

The deputy says investigators won’t know for sure whether the woman had a serious illness until an autopsy is conducted.

He says alcohol may have played a role in the argument and its aftermath.
