TILLAMOOK, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say a car carrying a man and his wife plunged down a 100-foot embankment and into the Wilson River east of Tillamook, trapping the 70-year-old woman for about a half hour.

Lt. Gregg Hastings said the woman was reported in critical condition late Tuesday.

The 70-year-old Tillamook man told troopers he might have fallen asleep while driving late Tuesday afternoon on Oregon Highway 6.

He was able to get out of the car and reach shore with help from two witnesses but the trio wasn’t able to reach the woman. A Tillamook Fire District emergency crew finally rescued her.

Medics performed CPR at the scene. Hastings says the woman was taken to a Tillamook hospital, then transferred to a Portland hospital.

The husband and wife were not immediately identified.

State Police say the highway was closed for about two hours.
