Tacoma police officer cleared in fatal shooting

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) -- The Pierce County prosecutor says a Tacoma police officer was justified in fatally shooting a young man who was backing a stolen car toward the officer.

Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said Tuesday that Officer Brett Beall acted within the law in November when he opened fire on a car driven by 18-year-old Austin Joseph Welling. The stolen car then crashed into Beall's patrol car.

The News Tribune reports (http://is.gd/xpqVAH) Welling was wanted on arrest warrants charging him with robbery and unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle.
