EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The Eugene City Council in ready to approve a tax break to get a large-scale student housing development started downtown.
The Register-Guard (http://bit.ly/IqO8v3 ) reports that sentiment on the council is 6-2 in favor of a property tax waiver totaling $8.5 million for the project that would house 1,200 students. Eugene is home to the University of Oregon.
The council is expected to take action in two weeks to make it official. The tax break is for 10 years.
The apartment development was proposed by Alabama-based Capstone Collegiate Communities, and it raised concerns about the impact of having so many students downtown.
