KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The National Association of Basketball Coaches has chimed in on a U.S. Supreme Court case focusing on whether universities can consider race when deciding who can enroll.
The NABC, based in Kansas City, Mo., and 43 current and former basketball coaches submitted an amicus brief Friday arguing that affirmative action is an important tool to ensure diverse student populations.
Abigail Fisher, who is white, sued the University of Texas at Austin after being denied admission in 2008. She argued that she was more qualified than minority students who were admitted based on their race.
The NABC brief says without affirmative action, many of the minorities who do gain admission are student-athletes, perpetuating stereotypes that students of certain races are only at school to compete in sports.
