PITTSBURGH (AP) — Two days after claiming him off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels, the Pittsburgh Pirates added reliever Hisanori Takahashi to the active roster before Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pittsburgh placed right-handed reliever Chad Qualls on the disabled list due to irritation of his left big toe.

Takahashi gives the Pirates a second left-hander in the bullpen for the stretch drive, joining Tony Watson. He had a 4.93 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 42 innings over 42 games for the Angels.

Pirates outfielder Jose Tabata and pitcher Jeff Karstens left Saturday’s game due to groin/hip injuries. Both players worked out and were evaluated Sunday morning.

Tabata was not in the lineup, but will not go on the disabled list. General manager Neal Huntington said he and Karstens are considered day to day.

Acquired in a July 31 trade from the New York Yankees, Qualls has a 7.04 ERA in nine games with Pittsburgh.
