Camas rallied from a 17-point deficit to take a lead, but the Chieftains got the rebounds and free throw down the stretch to escape town with the win.

Rian Bassett led Columbia River with 21 points.

River’s all-time leading scorer, Isaiah Smith, was held to 10 points, but the 10th point was the game winner.

Tied at 45, the Chieftains missed the front end of 1-and-1 situations but both times got the offensive rebound. Smith got the board the second time, stepped to the line and made 1 of 2 for the lead.

Jordan Lenard led Camas with 13 points. Trent Johnson added 10.

Camas coach Skyler Gillispie credited his team’s defense for keeping the team in the game. Columbia River led 28-11 at the half, but Camas outscored the Chieftains 18-4 in the third quarter.

Smith was held to three points in the final three quarters.

“It was the best defensive effort I’ve ever seen coaching,” Gillispie said. “It was amazing.”
