PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have hired Steve Sax as their first base coach and have added Turner Ward as their assistant hitting coach.

The Diamondbacks announced the moves Wednesday.

The 52-year-old Sax was a five-time All-Star second baseman. He has been a professional speaker on motivation and leadership since his playing days.

Sax and Arizona manager Kirk Gibson were teammates on the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sax was among the many Dodgers at home plate to greet Gibson after his home run won Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.

The 47-year-old Ward played parts of 12 seasons in the majors. The outfielder homered for the Diamondbacks in the 1999 playoffs.

Ward managed Arizona’s Double-A team in Mobile for the last two years, and won the Southern League title both seasons.
