Letter: Time to tell the NRA to back off

The Columbian
Published: December 25, 2012, 4:00pm

The National Rifle Association members are Republican votes in every election because their president, Wayne LaPierre, promoted guns as a way to stop criminal behavior and influenced Republicans to pass laws favoring guns as if they were necessary for protecting lives and preventing crime. The truth of the matter is that guns are perfect instruments for killing, not for protection.

I have lived through hundreds of headlines of mass shootings of children and adults because there were guns that made it all possible. Gabby Giffords, Columbine, the movie theater, the Army base, Virginia, Trayvon Martin, Clackamas Town Center and a young man who played his music too loud. I have yet to read about gun owners preventing crimes. The Second Amendment is an outdated instrument. It is time to tell the NRA and their lobbyists to back off.
