SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) — Louis Garrett scored 16 points and James Kinney 12 to lead San Jose State to a 72-55 victory against Texas State on Saturday.

Chris Cunningham added 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Spartans (6-5, 1-0 WAC).

Joel Wright had 22 points and Phil Hawkins 10 in the first and last WAC opener for the Bobcats (4-9, 0-1). Texas State arrived from the Southland Conference but is bolting for the Sun Belt after its one-year stay.

San Jose State, which departs the WAC for the Mountain West next year, took advantage of 25-percent shooting (8 of 32) by Texas State in the first half to build a 32-19 lead at the break.

The Bobcats got no closer than eight in the second half as San Jose State controlled the action inside. The Spartans outrebounded Texas State 41-31 and enjoyed a 48-28 scoring advantage in the paint.
