NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets are bringing back banner day for the first time in 16 years, scheduling the event for May 27 before their game against the San Diego Padres.

The payroll-cutting Mets, coming off their third straight losing season, held banner day from 1963-96 and are restoring it as part of their 50th anniversary celebration.

The team said Wednesday “we are confident that Mets fans will be appropriate in their creative expressions. As this is intended to be a fun and family-friendly event, we will reserve the right to refuse any profane or mean-spirited banner.”

New York said it will announce guest judges and prizes later.
