MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — University of Minnesota athletics director Joel Maturi will retire when his contract expires this summer.
School officials and the 67-year-old Maturi announced his retirement Thursday at a late morning news conference.
University President Eric Kaler says he and Maturi spoke for several months and decided it’s “simply the right time for Joel to retire.”
Maturi got the Gophers a new, outdoor football stadium during his tenure but also endured criticism for not acting quickly enough to remove high-profile coaches who weren’t winning.
