PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland firefighter has pleaded guilty to drunken driving in a crash that severed a utility pole and knocked out power to the area of the collision.

The Oregonian reports (http://is.gd/etcd6M) that 53-year-old Daniel Lyford had been scheduled for trial this week on multiple charges but recently pleaded guilty to the single count. He was sentenced to two years’ probation, a one-year driver’s license suspension and community service.

After the 2:30 a.m. crash last Nov. 18, authorities learned the pickup truck found down a muddy ravine was registered to Lyford, who lived a half mile away. When police went to his house, he answered, soaking wet and covered in mud. According to police reports, he told officers he had been home drinking for hours and was wet and muddy because he’d been gardening.
