WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) — James Johnson scored 18 points to lead Quinnipiac to a 71-48 win over Monmouth (N.J.) Saturday night in a Northeast Conference game.

Johnson was the only Bobcat in double figures, but that didn’t matter the way Quinnipiac (13-10, 6-6) shot and harassed Monmouth (7-8, 5-7). The Hawks, who’d won three straight games and four of their past five, trailed 36-25 at halftime and shot poorly all night.

Monmouth was 17 for 52 from the floor (32.7 percent). Quinnipiac hit 28 of 63 field goal attempts (44.4 percent). The Hawks made just one of 13 shots from 3-point range while the Bobcats went 4 for 14 beyond the arc. Monmouth’s lone trey came from Jesse Steele, who led the Hawks with 13 points. Teammate Dion Nesmith added 10.

Quinnipiac led the entire game after Dave Johnson hit a 3-pointer for the game’s first points. The Bobcats had a 46-24 rebounding advantage.
