KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — A transport minister says a private jet crashed while landing in Congo’s city of Bukavu, killing an unknown number and injuring a local governor.

Provincial Transport Minister Laban Kyalangalilwa said Sunday the private jet was carrying several well-known Congolese. He said South Kivu Governor Marcellin Cishambo has been admitted to the hospital for emergency treatment.

The minister said he has been told that some died in the crash, but he did not have further details. He said he did not know how many were on board.

Congo has one of the worst air safety records in the world. The Central African country’s safety regulations are notoriously lax.
