ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) — The European swimming championships have been pulled from the Belgian city of Antwerp because of a budget shortfall and will instead be held in Debrecen, Hungary.

Antwerp organizer Georges Straetemans, who is also vice chairman of the technical committee of the European swimming federation, says he could not bridge a financial gap of more than $525,000.

Hungarian swimming federation president Tamas Gyarfas says Debrecen is “the fastest solution available” and can count on the experience of organizing the short-course championships five years ago.

Straetemans had initially said the event was moved to London, where the Olympics will be held two months after the championships.
