NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Liberty have agreed to a free agent contract with veteran guard Kelly Miller.

Miller averaged 7.4 points and 2.8 assists in 34 games for the Washington Mystic last season.

The Liberty announced the deal in a statement Friday. Contract terms were not disclosed.

Liberty coach and general manager John Whisenant says Miller can play both point guard and shooting guard, which “frees up Cappie (Pondexter) to do what she does best, shoot and score.”

He called Miller “tough and athletic” and a good fit for the team’s defensive style.

At college star at Georgia, Miller was the second all-time leading scorer with 2,177 points and second all-time in assists (639). She was the second overall pick by Charlotte in the 2001 WNBA draft.

The Liberty open their season on May 19.
