EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The Edmonton Oilers have signed forward Ales Hemsky to a two-year contract extension worth $10 million.

Hemsky could have been a free agent after this season, and also would have been a prime trade target before Monday’s deadline if he remained unsigned.

Hemsky was drafted 13th overall by Edmonton in 2001 and has 421 points in 536 games. In 46 games this season, the Czech has five goals and 26 points. He has been hampered by injuries in recent seasons, but has remained fairly healthy this year.

The 28-year-old Hemsky original was drafted 13th overall by Edmonton in 2001 and has 421 points in 536 career games.
