Tuesday, January 3, 2012
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The Oregon State Police say five people died in three traffic accidents over the New Year's holiday weekend.
Last year, the police said, one person died in Oregon during the holiday period, and two years ago none did.
Over a decade, the police said, the average number of fatalities is five.
The data is from a state tracking system, and this year's is still preliminary.
The police said a 38-year old Vancouver, Wash., man died Saturday in a crash five miles west of Philomath.
On Sunday, a 31-year-old Salem man and a 3-year-old Salem girl died in a head-on crash north of Salem.
On Monday, a 56-year-old man and a 19-year-old man, both from Junction City, died after a head-on crash south of Junction City.
