NUREMBERG, Germany (AP) — Los Angeles Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez has been loaned to the Bundesliga club Nuremberg during the MLS offseason.

Nuremberg says on its website that Gonzalez trained with the club for the first time Thursday after joining the German club for its training camp in Turkey, where it is practicing during the Bundesliga’s winter break.

Nuremberg chairman Martin Bader says he is “delighted” to have Gonzalez on the team, adding that he had previously hoped to sign the defender after the 2011-12 season ends.

The 23-year-old Gonzalez was voted the MLS defender of the year in 2011 and helped the Galaxy win the championship.

Nuremberg is 15th in the 18-team Bundesliga, which resumes play on Jan. 20. American defender Timmy Chandler also is on the club.
