PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland firefighters checked on a man who had climbed 40 feet up a tree in Portland and was shouting for the love and respect of trees.

A firefighter was lifted up by a ladder truck Sunday and determined the man was not suicidal and had permission to climb the tree, so the fire department left.

KOIN reports the tree climber was environmental activist Tre Arrow. He was saying, “Portland, will you love and respect the trees?” When he climbed down he said the Occupy movement should include the earth in its demands.

Tre Arrow, who changed his name from Michael Scarpitti, served prison time for setting fire to cement and logging trucks in 2001 in the Portland area and was released in 2009.
