CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a one-year contract with left-handed pitcher Paul Maholm, adding depth to their starting rotation.
The deal announced Tuesday includes a club option for 2013.
The 29-year-old Maholm was limited by a left shoulder strain last season with Pittsburgh and made 26 starts, going 6-14 despite a 3.66 ERA. He was 53-73 over seven seasons with the Pirates.
In Chicago, he figures to fill a spot in the rotation behind Matt Garza and Ryan Dempster, assuming Garza isn’t dealt. The Cubs have been listening to offers for him but would like top prospects.
