STATESBORO, Ga. (AP) — Jelani Hewitt scored 13 points, Willie Powers 12 and Eric Ferguson 11 to lead Georgia Southern in a 58-53 win over Samford on Thursday night.

Hewitt hit a layup and sank two free throws in the game’s final 30 seconds to clinch the win for the Eagles (6-9, 4-1 Southern Conference), who led 54-53 with a minute left.

Georgia Southern fought back from a 32-29 halftime deficit, as Ben Drayton III and Powers each hit a 3-pointer to bookend a 9-3 run out of the locker room to put the Eagles up by three with less than 17 minutes to go. They led the rest of the way, and the Eagles have now won three of four in the wake of a season-high four-game losing streak.

The Bulldogs (3-12, 0-4) have lost a season-high six straight, a streak that started with an 82-50 loss to No. 2 Kentucky.
