Portland: 3 girls arrested in train attack
Thursday, January 12, 2012
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Portland police have arrested three teen girls accused of slapping and hitting a 14-year-old girl on a light rail train. The attack was captured on a choppy video that was briefly posted on YouTube.
Police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said an 18-year-old, a 16-year-old and a 13-year-old were arrested Thursday night for investigation of third-degree assault, riot, disorderly conduct, harassment and interfering with public transportation.
He says the mother of two of the girls was also arrested, accused of lying to police about her daughters' whereabouts.
Shot by a bystander, the video of the Dec. 26 attack showed three girls slapping and punching the Centennial Middle School student, who was on her way home from shopping. YouTube later removed the video.
Simpson says it doesn't appear the girls knew the victim, who has been identified as Julie and Barry Buckland's daughter Karley. Julie Buckland told The Oregonian (http://is.gd/RdWSyB ) this week that she was "horrified" by the attack.
