Southeast Missouri defeats SIU-Edwardsville 85-68

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) — Marland Smith had 20 points to lead five Southeast Missouri players scoring in double figures in an 85-68 victory over SIU-Edwardsville on Thursday night.

Nick Niemczyk added 17 points, Michael Porter 14, Leon Powell 13 and Tyler Stone 10 for the Redhawks (9-8, 4-1 Ohio Valley). One of the nation’s top shooting teams, Southeast Missouri made 32 of 57 (56.1 percent) attempts from the floor.

Jerome Jones had 19 points and seven rebounds and Kris Davis added 13 points for the Cougars (5-9, 3-2).

SIU-Edwardsville trailed 67-61 when it went cold, enabling the Redhawks to go on an 12-0 run. Marcus Brister converted a three-point play, Porter delivered a dunk and 3-pointer, and Smith made four free throws during a 4:07 stretch that gave Southeast Missouri an 18-point cushion with three minutes remaining.

Mark Yelovich had 13 points and Derian Shaffer 12 for the Cougars.
