FEDERAL WAY, Wash. (AP) — A man has been shot and killed by a Federal Way, Wash., police officer outside a Starbucks.

Police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock said the officer was heading to the Starbucks for a break about 1 p.m. Friday. Schrock said the officer “noticed what she believed to be a hand-to-hand drug transaction” inside a car outside the coffee shop.

Schrock says that in response to the officer’s commands, one of the two young men in the car started reaching for something underneath the seat. The officer continued yelling for the men to stop and to get out of the car. When the man continued reaching underneath the seat, the officer fired.

Schrock says the car took off after the shots were fired. The car was found abandoned at a nearby apartment complex; the driver was gone and the passenger was dead inside the vehicle.

Police are searching for the driver.

Auburn police will investigate the shooting.
