MIAMI (AP) — Reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo, who played under an assumed name until late last season, has avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $6 million, one-year contract with the Miami Marlins, a raise of $2.35 million.
Reliever Edward Mujica also avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal Tuesday.
Oviedo, formerly known as Leo Nunez, apologized in December for using a fake name and age, saying he falsified his identity when he was young to play professionally. He returned to his native Dominican Republic late last season, and the Marlins placed him on the restricted list.
