PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A man has died after two Portland officers fired at him on the roof of a downtown Portland parking garage.

Sgt. Pete Simpson says the man told dispatchers early Wednesday he had committed a robbery and planned to jump from the nine-story structure.

Police haven’t filled in many details. A midmorning police statement said that “at some point” after they asked for help from crisis negotiators, the officers fired on the man, who then dropped out of view behind a low wall.

He was later found dead. Police say he was armed but haven’t said with what, or whether he shot at or threatened the officers.

The shooting happened before the rush hour, but as officers swarmed to the scene to investigate, traffic was slowed and light-rail service was interrupted.
