KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ron Washington and Tony La Russa have been spending their spare moments the past few days fidgeting with potential lineups for next week’s All-Star game.

Of course, La Russa has had a little more time on his hands.

La Russa retired after managing the St. Louis Cardinals to the World Series championship last season. But protocol called for La Russa to be tabbed as the National League manager for the Midsummer Classic and, retired or not, he was quick to agree to the job.

Washington has been busy trying to keep his streaking Texas Rangers atop the AL West. He’s back in charge of the American League at the All-Star game for the second straight year.

The game is Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.
