The Vancouver Jayhawks and Camas-Washougal Granite had a rough start at the Northwest Senior Babe Ruth baseball regional in Kent.

The Jayhawks dropped their first game of pool play 15-5 to Wilder Baseball of Port Angeles on Thursday night. Friday night, the Jayhawks lost 5-1 to the Columbia Basin Riverdogs of Moses Lake.

Justin Rinta was 2 for 3 with a triple for the Jayhawks in Friday's game.

Friday morning, Camas-Washougal dropped its opener against Montana, 9-1.

Each of the 12 teams play four games with the top two in each pool meeting in semifinals on Monday. The championship also is Monday, with the winner advancing to the World Series in Texas.

Little League

State tournaments in softball and baseball crank up this weekend throughout Washington.

There are two softball tournaments in Clark County beginning today.

The 9-10 age group is playing at David Douglas Park. Evergreen Little League is representing District 4, and Lewis River is the District 6 representative.

At La Center Community Park is the junior softball tournament. Evergreen and Battle Ground both play at 3 p.m. today.

La Center and Evergreen, the local representatives in the major (ages 11-12) softball tournament in Kirkland, were eliminated earlier in the week.

In 9-10 baseball at Auburn, Salmon Creek opens against Richland today. Lacamas will face the winner of that game on Sunday.

In 10-11 baseball at Mill Creek, Cascade and Ridgefield begin play on Sunday.

The major baseball state tournament begins July 21 at Walla Walla. Glenwood and Central Vancouver have advanced to that event.

Major baseball, ages 11-12, is the level that culminates with the Little League World Series at South Williamsport, Pa., in late August.
