Letter: In praise of fighter jets’ noise

The Columbian
Published: July 29, 2012, 5:00pm

I have a different reaction to the noise the fighter jets make as they roar over downtown daily than what was reported in Gordon Oliver’s July 22 column.

If he had ever heard and recognized the unmistakable throbbing noise of enemy bombers high overhead, as many people did during World War II, Oliver and others would be immeasurably grateful to hear the roar of the jets, with intrepid pilots heading out to survey our skies and ascertain that all is well.

From where I live, I admit I do not hear every departure, but when I do, I am filled with thankfulness that we are protected and often offer up a prayer for the pilots’ safe return.
