NEW YORK (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles have placed designated hitter Jim Thome on the 15-day disabled list because an MRI showed that he had a herniated disc in his back.

Second baseman Robert Andino was activated Tuesday to take Thome’s place.

The 41-year-old Thome had two homers, six RBIs and 10 walks in 18 games since the Orioles acquired him from Philadelphia on July 1.

He hasn’t played since Friday night. Since joining Baltimore, he has hit career homers No. 610 and 611 to go past Sammy Sosa for 7th on the career list.

Andino, who missed slightly more than two weeks, was not in the lineup Tuesday night. He strained his shoulder diving to make a play. Andino is hitting .239 with 21 RBIs and five homers.
