YACHATS, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police SWAT team members have fatally shot a man they say was armed with a rifle when they encountered him as they watched a house in a remote area on the Oregon coast.

The Register-Guard reports that the Lane County sheriff’s office identified the man killed late Thursday night as 18-year-old Samuel Mullane.

Troopers were assisting the Lincoln County sheriff’s office after deputies learned that several men reportedly involved in a violent mid-May assault near Yachats (YA-hots) might be found at the rural, forested property.

State police say a man and a woman inside the house surrendered several hours later.

KVAL-TV reports the man was later taken into custody in connection with the assault investigation.

Three SWAT team members have been put on paid leave while the shooting is investigated.

Police said the area was about 7 miles east of U.S. 101 on the central coast.
