Miss Oklahoma pageant gets under way in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Miss Oklahoma State University has won the preliminary talent competition and a $1,000 scholarship at the 2012 Miss Oklahoma Pageant.

Nineteen-year-old Aly Akers won with a rhythmic freestyle baton routine on Tuesday. The 19-year-old is studying business management and pre-law.

In preliminary the rookie talent competition, Miss Sooner State, Victoria Renard, won $500 for a tap dance performance to “Swish.” The 21-year-old Kennewick, Wash., resident is studying dance management at Oklahoma City University.

The winner of the $500 scholarship in the preliminary swimsuit competition was Miss Frontier County, Veronica Wisniewski.

The 20-year-old attends Oklahoma City Community College, where she is studying journalism and public relations.

The Miss Oklahoma Pageant is held annually at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center. It concludes Saturday, when the winner will be crowned.
