BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — UAB and Florida State will meet in the first NCAA-sanctioned sand volleyball match.

They play Saturday on UAB’s sand courts to start the sport’s inaugural college season.

Sand volleyball dual contests feature five two-on-two matches with each team needing to win at least three to claim the victory. Each match is best two-of-three sets, utilizing rally scoring. The first two sets are played to 21 points, while the third, if necessary, is played to 15.

UAB’s roster is composed of members of the indoor team. Florida State has both indoor competitors and sand-only players.
