15-year term for Wenatchee Samaritan manslaughter

WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — The man who fatally struck a bystander offering to help with a disabled van in Wenatchee was sentenced Tuesday to more than 15 years in prison.

The sentence given to 51-year-old Juan Manual Gonzalez-Gonzalez was above the standard term for manslaughter because the jury found Jose Guadalupe Garcia-Sevilla was acting as a good Samaritan when he was killed.

As Garcia approached the stalled van last June, Gonzalez punched him in the face. Garcia fell back, hit his head on the ground and died the next day of brain injuries.

Gonzalez was convicted of manslaughter in February in Chelan County Superior Court and also convicted of assaulting and attempting to disarm a Wenatchee police officer who arrived at the scene.
