EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A 29-year-old man will spend at least 40 years in prison for fatally beating his former girlfriend on a Springfield, Ore., sidewalk in November 2010.

Lane County Circuit Judge Lauren Holland called Robert Darnell Boyd “extremely dangerous” when she imposed sentence Thursday.

The mother and sister of the 18-year-old victim, Allyson Archibald, were in court for the sentencing. They showed the judge a photo of Archibald, taken a few days before she died — and held up an urn containing her ashes.

Archibald left behind a 6-month-old son.

In a recent trial, Boyd acknowledged that he fatally battered the woman but said he doesn’t remember doing so. Experts for both the prosecution and defense testified that he had been physically, emotionally and likely sexually abused as a child.
