PINE VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a car that was stopped after a pursuit in San Diego County exploded and burned, killing the driver and injuring a Border Patrol agent.

U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/z033bA ) says it happened late Wednesday night in Pine Valley, about six miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

Justin De La Torre of the Border Patrol says agents got a report just before midnight that a car was heading the wrong way on Interstate 8 near Buckman Springs.

During the chase, authorities placed spike strips that blew out the car’s tires.

De La Torre says an agent was walking up to the driver’s side door when the car exploded, knocking the agent back and burning him. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The cause of the blast is under investigation.
