ISAF: Ainslie faces no further discipline

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The International Sailing Federation says star British sailor Ben Ainslie won’t face further disciplinary action following his disqualification from the 2011 world championships for confronting a television cameraman in a media boat.

ISAF’s executive committee released a statement Friday saying the penalties imposed against Ainslie to date were appropriate.

Further discipline could have cost Ainslie the chance to sail for his fourth straight gold medal at the London Olympics. If he wins the gold in the Finn class, he’ll become the most successful sailor in Olympic history.

Believing that a media boat passed too close during the world championships in Australia in December, an angry Ainslie jumped from his dinghy, swam to the boat and confronted a cameraman. He was disqualified from the final two races, which prevented him from medaling. He was leading the competition at the time.
