TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — A 42-year-old Washington woman has been sentenced to life in prison without parole in the April 2011 fatal shooting of her boyfriend.

Pierce County Superior Court Judge Frank Cuthbertson sentenced Barbara Clayton on Friday. This was Clayton’s “third strike.” She had previous convictions for robbery and assault.

The Pierce County prosecutor’s office says Clayton told deputies who responded to a 911 call about gunshots in a Roy neighborhood that she shot Curtis Giffin and wished she had done so years before. Her 13-year-old daughter heard the couple arguing and heard gunshots.

Jurors rejected a defense claim of temporary insanity.
