Harney Heights neighborhood will vote on split April 4

The Harney Heights Neighborhood Association will decide whether to divide in two at its April 4 meeting.

The proposal has been made to split Harney Heights Neighborhood Association east-west, approximately along 15th Street.

“The advantage in dividing is that each association may focus on the problems and assets unique to each half,” the latest neighborhood newsletter said. “The neighborhood, as it stands, is very large with a small core group trying to look out for over 5,000 households.”

Dividing into two would bring that down to about 2,500 households in each.

The neighborhood is composed of two different cultures: the more upscale one atop a ridge to the south, and the more downscale one below. Neighborhood leaders say it would be advantageous to break these apart, so each can pursue its own interests.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. April 4 at King Elementary School, 4801 Idaho St.
