PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland doughnut shop employee recalls thinking seconds after she was robbed at gunpoint that the female robber didn’t look that tough — and perhaps the gun wasn’t loaded.

So 20-year-old Jenny Abarca says she chased down the woman and started wrestling with her Wednesday. Then, Abarca tells The Oregonian, she found herself holding the gun, so she hit the woman on the head with it.

That’s when the robber handed back the money — about $70.

The Daylight Donuts employee headed back to her shop, gun in hand, and says the robber left when she saw Abarca pick up a phone to call police.

The gun turned out to be a BB gun that resembled a real weapon. Still, Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson cautions people not to take things into their own hands and instead focus on being “a good witness.”

He says Abarca is “very fortunate” and adds that police assume all guns are loaded.
