WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Wake Forest has hired former star player Jen Hoover as its women’s basketball coach.

The school announced Hoover’s hiring Wednesday.

Hoover starred for the Demon Deacons from 1987-91 and holds the program’s career records with 1,728 points and 1,006 rebounds.

In her only season as the head coach at nearby High Point, she guided the Panthers to a 20-13 record, a berth in the Big South title game and an appearance in the WNIT.

Before taking over at High Point, she spent three seasons as the top assistant to Joanne Boyle at California. Boyle is now at ACC rival Virginia.

She replaces Mike Petersen, who spent eight years at Wake Forest before resigning last month to take the North Texas job.
