SAN DIEGO (AP) — An accident that killed four sailors during a race from Southern California to Mexico’s Baja California last month will be reviewed by US Sailing, the national governing body of the sport.
US Sailing said Monday that the independent review was requested by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The 37-foot sailboat Aegean was destroyed on April 28 during the annual overnight Newport-to-Ensenada Yacht Race.
Recovered pieces of the yacht were small, leading to speculation of a collision with a massive ship. However, a GPS track of the Aegean ended at about 1:30 a.m. at one of the Coronado Islands, which rise sharply out of the Pacific in Mexican waters south of San Diego.
US Sailing is also reviewing an April accident that killed five sailors in a race outside San Francisco Bay.
