ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have fired hitting coach Mickey Hatcher after their dismal offensive start to the season.

Hatcher’s dismissal was announced Tuesday, about 90 minutes after the Angels had 12 hits in a 4-0 victory over Oakland.

Los Angeles promoted hitting coach Jim Eppard from Triple-A Salt Lake to replace Hatcher, who had been with the Angels since 2000.

A 15-year veteran as a player, Hatcher was the Angels’ hitting coach during their only World Series title run in 2002.

General manager Jerry Dipoto says the Angels have underachieved offensively. Los Angeles has scored just 134 runs in 37 games this season, ranking 22nd in the majors, while getting shut out a club-record eight times already.

Albert Pujols has been a disappointment to date, batting .212 with one homer.
