MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — Health officials are warning southern Oregon residents to update their dogs’ distemper vaccinations because an outbreak of the virus has been found in the local fox population.
The Mail Tribune newspaper reports (http://is.gd/YnuE1k ) that wildlife biologists have fielded more than a dozen calls in the past two weeks regarding gray foxes displaying strange behavior, such as walking in circles and foaming at the mouth.
The virus has already been confirmed in two gray foxes found dead in Ashland and one in Medford.
Similar outbreaks swept through the area’s raccoon populations in the early 1990s and mid-2000s.
