GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Attorneys for John Edwards say they will not call the former presidential candidate or his mistress Rielle Hunter to testify at his campaign corruption trial.

Defense attorneys also told a federal judge they expect to rest their case later Wednesday.

Hunter could have echoed Edwards’ position that he didn’t have direct knowledge of the secret effort to care for her and keep her out of the public eye. But she could have also called more attention to the lies surrounding her affair and pregnancy.

Edwards is accused of masterminding a plan to use money from two wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress during his bid for the 2008 White House.

Edwards faces six counts of campaign finance violations. If convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison.
